Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)

Image shows two homes: high risk due to minimal CPTED measures, and low risk with robust CPTED implementations like lighting and fencing.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is an innovative approach that uses physical design to help reduce crime and improve safety around your property and/or business.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office offers a FREE on-site safety assessment as part of its CPTED program.

An officer will visit your location and provide tailored CPTED recommendations.

CPTED strategies include:

  • Clear visibility: Keep windows unobstructed to allow natural surveillance.
  • Secure access points: Lock garbage areas, water valves, and electrical outlets.
  • Landscaping: Use intentional design to deter loitering and eliminate hiding spots.
  • Lighting: Well-lit spaces and motion lights help discourage trespassers.
  • Security systems: Use cameras and alarms where appropriate.
  • Strong locks and doors: Avoid hollow-core doors and inexpensive locks.
  • Clear signage: Post your business address with large, visible numbers.
